PLANNING CRITERIA FOR  PRIMARY SCHOOL BUILDING

PLANNING CRITERIA:-

          This is an elementary stage of education for children in age group of 6 to 12 years.


SIZE OF SITE

AREA : - 0.60 to 1.20 Hector
SHAPE : - Preferably Rectangular
WALKING DISTANCE: Not more than 0.60 Km.


SIZE OF SCHOOL :


a)   Maximum distance a child may walk 0.6 Km. i.e. not more than 10 minutes.
b)   neighbor unit can be planned for 3 to 7 thousand no. of children
c)   School going children may be roughly calculated on the basis that about 120 children will be available for thousand population for a primary school.
d)   The figure taken is 40 students / thousands(1000).
e)   This index helps to find size of a school building.


SIZE OF SCHOOL BASED ON SECTION


a)   One Section School for 200 children
4 – Classrooms
1- multipurpose room

b)   Two Section School for 400 children
4 – Classrooms
1- multipurpose room
      c)  More than two section school will be corresponding no. of classrooms.

CLASSROOM :

a)   No of Students for class 40 to 50
b)   Area per student 0.93 m2 seating on floor and using a writing table.
c)   Minimum area of class 40 x 0.93 = 37 Sq. mt.
Say  6.2 m  x 6.2 m
d)   Orientation preferably north Light.


MULTIPURPOSE ROOM : (Room for Drawing, Singing etc.)

a)   Capasity of 2 classes i.e. for 80 students.
b)   Students may be use desk and chair or may sit on floor or may work standing.
Area 56 Sq.m. assuming that children will sit on Floor.


LAYOUT OF CLASSROOM

a)   Assume room size 6.2m x 6.2 m and children sitting on a floor.
b)   Distance between blackboard upto front edge of first writing table is 2m.
c)   Length of each table 5.5 cms.
d)   Distance between front edges of two raws 80 cms.
e)   Width of inner gangways 55 cms.
f)    Width of gangways near walls  40 cms
g)   Children may sit in two or three together on one bench.

SANITARY UNITS AND WATER SUPPLY:

a)   W.C – 1 for every 40 boys
-         1 for every 25 girls
b)   Wash Basin – 1 for 40 boys and girls
c)   Urinals – 1 for 20 boys.
d)   Drinking water tapes - 1 for 50 boys and girls
e)   Drinking water tapes – Provide separately for staff.
f)    Water Supply – 40 MLD (Million Liter per Day)

HEAD MASTER’S OFFICE :

          25 TO 35 Sq. mt. allows some storage and space for clerk.

STAFF ROOM:

a)   Assume 1 teacher per class room.
b)   2 Sq.mt. per Staff for 50% of staff.


STORAGE AND RECORD ROOM: 10 TO 12 Km2.

KITCHEN : Minimum 13 Sq.mt.

FIRST AID ROOM:

RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION:
For 50% of staff if possible , otherwise provide minimum for Headmaster and class IV staff.

PLAY AREA:

0.6 to 0.8 hectors can accommodate .
Playing equipment for standards I to III (age 5-8). Such as climbing appratus, swings, slides, teeters, marry-go-round.
For standards IV and V  Space for games and physical exercise.

COST:
a)   Non-productive areas such as verandas, administration, sanitary units, storage, circulation etc. should be minimum and should not exceed 40% of total area i.e. the design efficiency should be at least 60%.

b)   A 50% operable glazing is 35% economical than a fully operable glazing.
